What to Pack for a Winter Trip to Lapland

Visiting Lapland in winter is a magical experience — but it requires the right gear. Temperatures in Levi regularly drop to -20°C and can reach -35°C in January and February. Don't worry though: with the right layers, you'll be perfectly comfortable.

The Three-Layer System

Finnish people have mastered the art of dressing for extreme cold. The secret is layering:

Base Layer (Against Your Skin)

Merino wool or synthetic thermal underwear. Avoid cotton — it absorbs moisture and will make you cold.

  • Thermal top (merino wool recommended)
  • Thermal leggings
  • Wool socks (bring 3-4 pairs)

Mid Layer (Insulation)

This is your warmth layer. Fleece or down works best.

  • Fleece jacket or wool sweater
  • Fleece-lined trousers or down pants
  • Warm hat that covers your ears

Outer Layer (Wind and Snow Protection)

A windproof, waterproof shell keeps the elements out.

  • Winter jacket (ski jacket works perfectly)
  • Waterproof snow pants
  • Winter boots (rated to at least -30°C)

What the Resort Provides

For all outdoor activities booked through Olo Resort, we provide:

  • Thermal overalls (worn over your own clothes)
  • Arctic-rated boots
  • Thick mittens and balaclavas
  • Helmet (for snowmobile activities)

So you don't need to buy expensive Arctic gear — just bring your layers and we'll handle the rest.

Often Forgotten Essentials

  • Hand and toe warmers: Small heating pads that fit inside gloves and boots
  • Lip balm with SPF: The cold and sun reflection off snow can chap your lips quickly
  • Sunglasses: Essential on sunny winter days — snow blindness is real
  • Extra batteries: Cold drains batteries fast. Keep spares in an inside pocket close to your body
  • Buff or neck gaiter: Protects your face when the wind picks up

Camera Gear Tips

If you're planning to photograph the Northern Lights:

  • Bring a tripod (lightweight travel tripods work)
  • Extra camera batteries (keep them warm in your pocket)
  • A headlamp with red light mode (preserves your night vision)
  • Lens cloth (condensation forms when moving between cold and warm air)
